USAID/South Sudan provided funding to the Extending Service Delivery (ESD) Project to develop the capacity of the Government of South Sudan Ministry of Health (GOSS/MOH) to provide leadership in reproductive health and family planning (RH/FP) services.

The ESD contribution to the USAID/South Sudan Health for Transformation bilateral project was in collaboration with John Snow, Inc. (JSI)—the lead agency for the USAID Transformation Project, development of the Maternal and Reproductive Health Policy Framework, It included:

  • Development of South Sudan Family Planning Techncial Guidelines and
    Infection Prevention Guidelines
  • Strategy for integrating family planning into the Transport Corridor Initiative (TCI) HIV/AIDS interventions, in collaboartion with Family Health International (FHI)

ESD supported GOSS/MOH through the following:

  • Conducted rapid appraisal to assess RH/FP status and identify gaps and needs in RH/FP services for internally displaced populations and refugees in Southern Sudan.
  • In partnership with FHI, participated in a baseline assessment for the Transport Corridor Initiative—an AIDS service delivery program along Sudan’s major road transport corridor linking South Sudan with other HIV/AIDS high-risk counties  of Kenya, Uganda and Congo.
  • Assessed the potential for integrating FP into the HIV/component in selected sites in Southern Sudan.
