Scaling Up High-Impact FP/MNCH Best Practices:
Achieving Millennium Development Goals in Asia and the Near East

Technical Meeting
September 3-8, 2007
Millennium Hilton Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand

Focus on Scaling-Up FP/RH and MCH Health Programs Through Integration, Collaboration:
Notes from the Technical Meeting

The Millennium Development Goals most recent report shows that, in ANE countries, health-related goals are those most off track. “In many countries progress is lacking and in some, the situation has worsened,” said Mr. G. Giridhar of the UNFPA in his opening address. “Linkages and integration are the key to the most cost-effective interventions.”

450 Participants Attended
450 participants from 18 countries of the ANE region came to present their successes, analyze failures, and share strategies. Participants included representatives from government, NGOs, USAID, WHO, UNFPA and other organizations. Access the participant list here.

150 Technical Presentations
Nearly 150 presentations focused on the best available practices in maternal, newborn, and child health. In additions, sessions on fostering change, management strategies and technology addressed practical barriers to expanded health services. Speakers included international and country experts in a diverse range of fields, including representatives from governments, NGOs, USAID, WHO, and UNFPA. Access the technical presentations here.

Creating Paths Forward
Fourteen countries developed and presented plans for scaling up best practices in their countries. In addition, three to four of these country teams will be awarded grants to assist in their continued development of these plans.

ESD was pleased by the enthusiasm and commitment of the participants. Gary Cook, Senior Health Advisor with the Asia and Near East Bureau at USAID, Washington, echoed their sentiments. “There is no work more important than [this] work. Shout about it and—above all—keep doing it.”

Our sincere thanks to all the meeting planners and partners who made the event such as success. Access a list of partners, planners, and session leaders here.
