How to Work With ESD

USAID/Washington and Missions:

ESD, which is a five-year Leader with Associates Cooperative Agreement, builds partnerships with USAID missions throughout the developing world.

There are three ways in which USAID offices can work in partnership with ESD:

  • Field support - The local mission obligates part of its budget to an ESD project on an annual basis. The mission directs the activity in close collaboration with USAID Washington, D.C.
  • Associate Awards - These awards are similar to a bilateral agreement, though they are not bid competitively. After the award is approved by USAID Washington, the local mission oversees the activity. These awards can fund work for several years and the amounts are generally larger than those for buy-ins.
  • Core Funds - ESD funds are available on a limited basis to advance global learning and state of the art in evidence-based best practices. USAID Global Leadership Priority funds can also used to support these types of activities.

Other Donors/Sectors:

ESD takes a fully integrated, multi-sectoral approach to its work. ESD collaborates with both health and non-health institutions, and regularly works with international development and financial organizations, as well as the public and commercials sectors to extend access to reproductive health and family planning services.
