ESD and Religious Leaders
In recent years, there is growing recognition that religious leaders and communities of faith play an important role in shaping health-seeking behavior.
Religious leaders often act as arbiters of morality, ethics and of what is prescribed or proscribed by faith. Consequently, activities that are supported by religious leaders and religious institutions have the potential to promote and sustain positive changes in maternal, neonatal and child health. Religious entities, for instance, often play an important role in the community leadership , which influences local health activities. It is, therefore, imperative that religious leaders have accurate and appropriate information and skills to help their followers and community members make informed choices on matters related to their health and well-being, especially as it concerns the healthy timing and spacing of pregnancy.
The ESD Project's Religious Leaders Program is based on the critical role that women and men of faith play in their communities. The project seeks to mobilize these leaders to improve the health of women, children and families in the countries where it works.
